Terrarium kits: choose the right type and check what is missing
Compare the growing method, exact contents, and work left to you before buying a starter or DIY kit.

The short answer
Choose a terrarium kit for the plants and care you want to provide. For a closed humid garden, look for an accessible covered vessel, identified compatible plants, suitable root medium, and usable planting and care instructions. “Starter,” “complete,” and a finished product photo do not tell you which of those are in the selected option.
A refill can make sense when you already have glass and tools. For drying succulents, plan an open arrangement with a real water outlet; for epiphytic air plants, keep the plant removable with airflow and drying space. Seeds and preserved decorations serve different projects from an established living foliage garden.
Start with the project, not the number of pieces
| Your project | Useful kit specification | Check before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| Closed humid foliage garden | Covered clear vessel, compatible living plants, appropriate root medium, planting and ongoing care guidance. | Actual plant identities, usable space and opening. A fully planted photo may show an example rather than every included item. |
| Refill for glass you already own | Specified quantities of medium and any chosen base materials; plants and moss only if selected. | Glass is often excluded. Match quantities to the inside footprint and planned root depth, not just “small” or “large.” |
| Plant-only assortment | Named plants, quantity and arrival form, with a substitution policy. | You still need the vessel, root medium or support, tools and growing position. A mixed pack is not proof of compatibility. |
| Open drying succulent display | An open display with a draining planting container, appropriate mix and identified plants. | Look for a real outlet or a removable draining pot. Gravel in a solid glass base does not provide an outlet. |
| Epiphytic air-plant display | An identified air plant and accessible, open support or vessel. | Remove the plant for watering and drying. Sand and shells are decorative; a soil bed and a sealed lid are not the intended growing method. |
| Seed-growing activity | Named seeds, growing containers or medium, instructions and the relevant age/supervision guidance. | Expect sowing and a growing stage, rather than an instant planted foliage garden. Read the actual manual for the experiment. |
| Preserved or artificial display | Clear labeling of what is preserved, dried or artificial. | Choose it for decoration. If you want living growth, do not buy preserved moss or faux plants as substitutes for live plants. |

- Compare the care behind open and closed glass Decide what conditions you want before choosing a bundle.
- Check the proposed plants Use the recorded requirements rather than a bundle label.
Scope and important limits
A useful fit when
- Choosing a first plant-only kit, a gift, or a refill for existing glass.
- Comparing a bundle with buying the necessary parts separately.
Use another path when
- Reptile or amphibian enclosure requirements.
- Hands-on product rankings or a live price and inventory comparison.

Worked check: a no-glass ingredients kit
Using the Botanical Boys small no-glass listing, the result is “ask first” for a buyer who wants to use an existing vessel. The public description confirms some contents but does not establish the plant identities, actual sizes or material quantities needed to check that vessel. This is a completed listing review, not a tested planting recipe.
| Field | What the public listing establishes | Record and next action |
|---|---|---|
| Confirmed in the box | Tools, clay pellets, sphagnum, substrate, decorative materials and plants are listed. | Record those categories, without inventing plant names, amounts or suitability. |
| Needed separately | The title and description exclude the glass vessel. | Use a measured suitable vessel you own, or include one in the shopping list and cost. |
| Plant identity and fit | Plants are listed without the botanical names or actual sale dimensions needed for this check. | Ask for current identities, rooted state, rootball/canopy sizes and substitutions. Compare the reply with your intended care and vessel. |
| Medium quantity and vessel range | The description names materials but does not provide the prepared amounts and usable planting dimensions needed here. | Ask for the ingredients, added fertilizer, prepared quantity and intended planting area. Keep fit and top-up costs open until answered. |
| Instructions and receiving | The page describes build/care guides reached through a QR code inside the box. | Ask to read the relevant instructions before buying, and confirm dispatch, receiving and issue-reporting arrangements for your destination. |
| Decision | A no-glass ingredients format is confirmed; fitness for this buyer’s vessel is not. | ASK FIRST. Send the questions below; add confirmed extras and quotes to the worksheet. If a necessary answer remains unavailable, choose another offer or separate supplies. |
Evidence[1]
- Prepare the questions this check uncovered Use your own vessel, destination and intended planting.
- Record answers and the final action Unanswered requirements stay open rather than becoming a zero-cost purchase.
Edit a message for the seller
Replace the brackets and remove irrelevant questions. Use your own listing and conditions. Copy or download the message, then send it through the seller’s contact channel; editing it here does not send anything.
Fill this in on the page, then copy or download it before leaving. If your browser does not start a download, use Copy edited text. Your edits stay in this open page only; they are not saved to an account or sent anywhere.
Audit the selected option before checkout
Write each item as included, already owned, or still to buy. An unspecified detail is a question for the seller, not an assumed extra.
- Root medium, amounts, and any separatorFind ingredients, added feed and the volume supplied. For a layered humid plan, establish what keeps fine medium from mixing into the coarse collection space. Do not assume that every bag is a root medium or that all of it must go into the vessel.
- A real growing positionCheck the plants against the light where the display will live. An LED ornament or illuminated lid may only light the scene for viewing. For example, Tropical Glass explicitly describes the Barcelona LED lid as decorative, not a grow light; its batteries are excluded.
- Check the proposed base and water route Collection space and a real drainage outlet perform different jobs.
- Assess the growing light separately Check leaf-level coverage and placement before buying a lamp add-on.
Real listings: compare what the name leaves out
These examples illustrate different buying decisions. They are not ordered by quality or value, and a listed plant pack is not our endorsement of every plant or substitution. Read the current variant and delivery terms on the supplier’s own page; the examples do not promise service to your address.
Already own glass? Tropical Glass Basic Starter Kit — UK
The base listing specifies soil, clay pebbles, activated charcoal, a cork tamper and a guide. Glass is explicitly excluded; plants, moss and tool sets depend on the selected options. This is a useful comparison for a refill, but not a complete purchase for someone starting with no vessel. Ask about quantities and the plant identities in the chosen size.
Need glass too? Tropical Glass Barcelona — UK
This listing includes a covered glass container, live plants, moss, growing materials, decorations and a guide. Tool sets and the LED lid are optional. The seller says the LED is aesthetic rather than a grow light and that plants can be substituted. Confirm the current plant list and care needs before accepting an assortment; included glass does not resolve light or long-term growing space.
Compare the arrival form: Flower & Twig Tropical Jar XL — Australia
The listing specifies a lidded jar, seven assorted plug plants, live moss, separate growing and decorative materials, two wooden assembly tools, and assembly/care guidelines. The important difference is the assortment of plugs: ask for the actual plant selection and how each is prepared, rather than assuming seven mature potted plants. Check the seller’s current destination limits and who will care for the live contents before a gift is opened.
Want a removable air-plant display? Air Plant Shop Teardrop Beach — US
The supplier describes a glass teardrop, a living air plant, white sand, decorative stones and sea-life accents. This buys a display arrangement rather than a humid soil-garden refill. Check the actual plant and opening, and make sure it can be removed without pulling it through decorations. Keep a separate watering and complete drying route; decorative sand is not the plant’s root medium.
Want to sow seeds? Thames & Kosmos Light-Up Terrarium
Wow in the World: Light-Up Terrarium is a seed-growing science activity. The manufacturer describes cress seeds, growing containers, faux plants, glowing decorations and UV LED string lights. Choose it for that experiment and follow its age and supervision instructions. It does not provide established foliage plants, and its glow effect is not evidence that the growing-light needs of replacement plants are met.
Check quantities against usable space
Ask for liters or another clear volume for the root medium, and for the intended planting footprint and depth. “One bag” and the vessel’s total capacity include no assurance that roots have enough room after base materials and decorations are added.
For a rectangular planting footprint, a rough geometric estimate is inside length × inside width × planned medium depth in centimeters, divided by 1,000, to obtain liters. A 20 × 10 cm footprint with 4 cm of medium is 0.8 L before rootballs and hardscape displace it. This illustrates volume only: 4 cm is not a recommended depth for every plant, and a curved or tapered jar needs a different estimate.
Leave room above the planting for leaves, growth, a fitted lid and access. Do not pour in every supplied bag to make the package empty. If the roots, growing medium and access cannot fit together, choose a different vessel, fewer suitable plants, or separate components before buying.
- Allow for the space the planting will use Check the container shape, rootballs, cover, and future care.
- Choose root medium for the planting Keep ingredient and root requirements with your quantity estimate.
Try your own tools before buying a tool add-on
Use an empty vessel to test reach, controlled pouring and the route in and out. A short handle may suit a wide opening; a deep narrow bottle can require longer implements.

Evidence[4]
Buy the bundle, fill a gap, or choose the parts?
- Buy the bundle
- Useful when it removes real preparation work
- Check
- You need the vessel and materials, the actual plants fit the same care method, and quantities and instructions are clear.
- Action
- Compare the delivered total plus genuinely missing essentials with equivalent separate parts. Value the matched preparation and support you will use; ignore the decorative piece count.
- Stop or reassess
- A key plant, medium, growing position or access route remains unresolved. Ask before paying rather than treating “complete” as an answer.
- Buy only a refill or missing pieces
- Useful when the glass and tools already work
- Check
- Your existing vessel is clean, intact and accessible, with enough usable growing space.
- Action
- Order the necessary medium, identified plants or support in amounts that fit. Skip duplicated tools and decorations you will not use.
- Stop or reassess
- You would be forcing the wrong growing method into a favorite jar. Change the vessel or planting instead.
- Choose components separately
- Useful for specific roots, plants or maintenance needs
- Check
- You need a draining inner pot, a removable mount, a particular plant or a specialist root medium.
- Action
- Build one coherent list for that method. For a flytrap, confirm its water, nutrient-poor medium, light and seasonal plan rather than adapting a generic fertilized foliage pack.
- Stop or reassess
- The combined order is still an assortment without a shared care method. Keep incompatible plants in separate arrangements.
Fill a purchase worksheet and keep your decision
Use one worksheet per exact option. Fill it here or download it to your notes. Compare the same usable project in one currency: package plus all required extras and delivery, versus separate supplies using suitable items you own. Missing quotes stay blank, so they cannot make an incomplete kit look cheaper.
Fill this in on the page, then copy or download it before leaving. If your browser does not start a download, use Copy edited text. Your edits stay in this open page only; they are not saved to an account or sent anywhere.
- Finish the separate-supplies side of your comparison Check usable space and remove extras without a job.
Plan the handover before ordering live contents
Check the parcel against the selected option
Check glass, parts, labels and plant forms before assembly, and keep photos and packaging for the seller’s stated claim process. Resolve a wrong plant or missing essential before putting the planting together.
- Inspect incoming plants and observe separately Use the full specimen checks before plants join other material.
Build the chosen growing arrangement
Set up the suitable light position, prepare the correct root medium or support, and follow the assembly route for that method. Keep the actual plant names and care instructions with the finished display.
- Follow the complete planting steps Choose humid foliage, drying succulents, air plants or the flytrap branch.
